overview

This project is part of the IterateUX design challenge where I led the end-to-end design process and managed the project timeline. My team, with 4 UX designers, concluded the challenge as the Winner team. 🎉

problem

Menopausal women experience negative effects such as hot flushes, anxiety & depression. Are the women equipped to cope with these symptoms?

Secondary research shows 90% of women were never educated about Menopause, >60% started looking for information only when symptoms started.

solution

Empower menopausal women to cope with their symptoms effectively through education and support.

Empowering menopausal women to cope with their symptoms effectively

the challenge
The prompt

Create a smart mobile app powered by AI and wearable tech to monitor and boost your well-being. Receive instant feedback on both physical AND mental health, making holistic wellness easily accessible.

Given the prompt, I knew I had to begin with secondary research to narrow the scope of project and determine the problem to solve.

research
After researching, I decided on female health topic - Menopause. It had potential as an untapped industry due to social stigma and lack of awareness surrounding it.
competitive analysis
To identify gaps and opportunities in the market, my team analysed the current app offerings. I selected the Balance App because it is the leading B2C menopause app in the UK, developed by a menopause specialist with strong credibility and extensive research behind it.
I also worked on identifying improvements areas in booking screen flow for Balance App.
user research
My team interviewed six diverse women, aged 40 to 50, to deepen our understanding of their experiences and frustrations. We then synthesized our insights using Affinity Mapping.
the users
user personas
Based on the users my team interviewed, I developed two personas with varying levels of tech-savviness. I saw a need to differentiate them, as our target age group (40s to 50s) often has limited familiarity with technology.
user journey map
To better understand our users, I mapped their journey to identify pain points and target improvements where they struggled most.
mid-fi wireframes
My team began rapid prototyping with the tight timeline. I chose to work on community wireframes as it was the idea I was most interested in developing.
design iterations
Design driven by testing and feedback
My team conducted two rounds of usability testing with four participants each. In the first round with the mid-fi prototype, I observed navigation challenges, prompting design iterations.
Round #1
Round #2
Smart watch integration
83% of our users were in favor of a technological approach to menopause using wearables. We explored the wearables landscape and decided to work on smart watches to incorporate easily into user’s lifestyles.

Smartwatch Emergency alert

Feedback:
Users felt it would be more convenient to have guided actions shown in smart watch so they need not open the App from their phone.

Solution:

We included guided actions in the smart watch.

style guide
My team chose purple as it is a calming colour that can help women who are anxious with menopause. The font Inter was used due to its modern look, simplicity and easy readability.

final designs

key takeaways

For Menocare App, the design solutions aimed to offer an intuitive, supportive, and comprehensive user experience.

Success metrics

1. User Engagement: Increased daily and monthly active users, indicating the app's usefulness.
2. User Satisfaction: High ratings and positive feedback, showing satisfaction with features and usability.
3. Health Outcomes: Improved symptom management and overall health from regular app use.

Challenges faced

Remote Collaboration: The team encountered difficulties with seamless communication and coordination, which affected the development pace.

Time constraint: With limited time, prioritizing the most essential features was challenging.

My learnings

Effective remote collaboration and diverse team skills led the team to overcome early usability setbacks, focus on key tasks, and ultimately win the challenge.

next steps

Acknowledging real life constraints if it were to be developed, I aim to enhance the App's reach and effectiveness, creating a more inclusive and supportive tool for those experiencing menopause.

1. Inclusive Research: Broaden the research to include transgender women to meets their needs.
2. Multilingual Support: Provide multiple language options for global accessibility.
3. Accessibility: Incorporate screen readers, alternative text and screen magnifiers for enhanced usability.

Thanks for reading.
